Horace & Bunwinkle is the first book I ever wrote.
However it took five years to go from first draft to publication.
My youngest son came up with the names Horace and Bunwinkle.
He wanted to watch Wallace and Gromit, but couldn’t remember the name. Originally, I was going to call Horace and Bunwinkle Quincy and Queen.
The story changed
In the original version Horace was grieving the death of his human dad. His whole personality revolved around that fact.
I decided to write the book after I saw this door.
I was certain I saw the outline of a dog and a pig in the grain of the wood. I took that as a sign. Can you see them?
The idea for the characters came from a real event.
Many years ago I read about a potbelly pig named Lulu and an American Eskimo dog named Bear that saved the life of their human. Bear stayed by his owner’s side, barking for all he was worth, while Lulu went and blocked the road until someone stopped and she was able to bring the person back to help.
The illustrator of Horace & Bunwinkle also illustrated the Great Mouse Detective series.
